Located on the Lower East Side, DEAR:55’s stark white interior is filled with a mix of vintages an current collections. Every attempt at classification results in paradox and juxtaposition: unusual yet functional, reminiscent of Scandinavian style yet with a undeniable New York twist, simple and minimal yet undoubtedly original. Make sure you don’t miss a gander at the store’s own collection of handcrafted jewelry.

Blackbird primarily focuses on Menswear, with an outstanding (read: amazing) portfolio under its belt. Their success lies in its careful curated blend of staples and more obscure finds. Not convinced? Have a look at their blog. Every city needs one of these, but for now we’ll have to make do with their online store.

Summary
Halfsleeve may be the new comers to the block, but they’ve been quick to make a big splash down in Australia. Located slightly off the beaten path just down the road from the usual suspects, the strong list of international and local brands you don’t often see on the shelves in Sydney. In fact, if you’re in town and you’re after some authentic Australian streetwear produce, Halfsleeve is an obvious pick.
In keeping with the ink theme their inauguration party at the end of Junary 2009 featured a collaboration with Julian Meagher and showcased Nanami Cowdroy. Judging from the turn out it’s obvious the Halfsleeve has the support of the community here, can’t wait to see what the team have in store for us in the near future.
Mini Interview
Co-Founder Teik sheds some light.
Who's behind Halfsleeve? What's the story behind the store name?
There are three of us involved with the shop. Two based in Sydney and one in Tokyo. All of us have worked in retail either here or in Japan for years and just felt it was time to go out on our own. The name, well amongst other stuff we're into clothes and tattoos. The idea behind the emblem comes from the Japanese family crest.
Why open shop in Sydney? What do you love about it, and what do you hate about it?
The other partners and I kind of felt that there weren't enough interesting places to shop in Sydney. So we're trying to do our bit to help the situation. What we love: That it’s not Tokyo. What we hate: That it’s not Tokyo.
Your favourite place to eat??
Menya on Market St, not the one in Chinatown.
Favourite place to drink?
The terrace uptop of Jazushi on Devonshire St.
Recommended tourist destination?
Fish and chips at La Perouse come late afternoon. A few beers don't go astray either.

Summary
Behind the façade of a gentrified shophouse lies one of the most progressive stores in Singapore; the Asylum store has been described by founder Chris Lee as an experiment that has been working quite well. Serving up an impressive platter of apparel, music, literature and lifestyle products, Asylum caters to everyone from design fetishists to the average tourist looking for someone different. Between producing award winning creative, hosting art and cultural events and running such an amazing store, they’re obviously on to a good thing. They don’t do mail or online orders, so you’ve got no excuse not to check out the gorgeous interiors in person.
Mini Interview
Chris Lee offers his two cents.
Why open shop in Singapore? What do you love about Singapore, and what do
you hate about Singapore?
I wanted to change the retail scene in Singapore back in 1995. We had nothing but shopping malls and the same chain of brands. I thought that we could spiced up the retail scene a little. Singapore is so small it's easy to do experiments, it's also only 7 hours away from heaven … Tokyo. I hate our lack of seasons and lack of passion.
Your favourite place to eat??
Robertson Walk, it's a 5 minutes walk from my place, and there are lots of restaurants there.
Favourite place to drink?
Klee Bar in Portsdown. Awesome bar.
Recommended tourist destination?
Dempsey hill. Nice vibe with good restaurants and bars set in a jungle. 5 minutes away from Orchard road. Very unique.
A store as an extension to a creative agency seems logical, but with the day to day of running an agency taxing enough, what were the inspirations and motivations to put in the hard yards to see it through?
I guess when I started the retail arm I didn't know the amount of effort that would be needed to upkeep the store! I really wanted a space that would be inspirational to our generation of creatives so we're constantly having new products to keep it exciting. I think the amount of encouragement we’ve received from the public has kept us going all these years. I think our store appeals to quite a wide range of people looking for unusual stuff. Some tourist come especially to us so that gives us added pressure not to disappoint.

Summary
Quarters Boutique opened its doors in the middle of 2008. Exactly a year younger than sibling store Qubic, conveniently located downstairs, the boutique focuses on the higher and more selective end of streetwear. Just have a look at their portfolio. An obvious choice, they do mail order as well, so Australians take note.
Mini Interview
Here's what founder Frank Liew had to say.
You've been collecting accolades and praise from all over the world. What's the motivation behind pushing the boundaries with the product you stock and has it been a challange introducing the products in NZ?
Just being tired of seeing people try but put their efforts into the completely wrong direction. We did this because this is what we love doing, no more, no less. Everything we put into our stores is because it is something that we put our names behind for their own strengths (and weaknesses). The diversity of this culture is absolutely amazing, and the way it is constantly evolving, even now, is really interesting to me. It hasnt' been much of a challenge, New Zealanders in our big cities are quite open to new things if you explain it to them. Perhaps the biggest challenge is convincing people overseas that there are more than just hobbits, sheep, and Flight of the Conchords in this country.
How's the reception been? I know NZ has a thriving Hip Hop and D&B scene …
Really good. The entire culture which fashion, art, music and everything is so intertwined in has been a firm part of the Auckland landscape for the better part of the last 25 years, so introducing what we have was only a mere sidestep (or forward step?). We've won a couple of industry accolades for our store so I guess it's nice to know that you are respected also on a professional level too.
Why open shop in Auckland? What do you love about Auckland, and what do you hate about Auckland?
It is the city I grew up in. I've lived in a lot of places around the world but I always seem to end up back here. I love the air. I hate the weather.
Your favourite place to eat in Auckland?
Zap, Thai restaurant in the city. Beautiful little spot and spot on with a lot of their dishes.
Recommended tourist destination in Auckland?
The entire country. Greener than your grocery store.

Deus Ex Machina Camperdown
Summary
Dues is primarily a motocycle company focused on the design and construction of custom motorcyles. Christened “Temple of Enthusiasm”, Dues Ex Machina’s flagship store lives up to its name. Even though none of us here ride, we can’t help but get excited every time we walk through their doors. The 1600sq metre factory is home to the Dues showroom, workshop facilities, design studio and bakery café. The fit-out is so rich and the bikes on display are simply amazing. (The Dues TW225 Hillclimber almost convinced me to go out and get a license.) Apparel, literature and art flesh out their portfolio; the café is hardly an afterthought and makes for a great pit-stop. Grab a Dues tee, and be sure to swing around the back to sneak a peak at the workshop. Mandatory.

Summary
The Heist is serious business. Since opening their doors in October 2007, they've stuck to their mission of introducing new talent to consumers. Showcasing produce both international and local, established and independent, side-by-side, they've certainly separates them from the run-of-the-mill carbon copy streetwear stores you can find all over the world. Check out their blog for some straight shooting, and happy snaps of the cats over in Melbourne. People, this is a no-bullshit establishment, one to check when you're in Melbourne.
Mini Interview
Founder Caine Cherubin took the time to answer a couple of questions.
Why Melbourne? How's it been running Heist?
Melbourne was the best choice for me at the time, as I run a wholesale agency in Melbourne, and we were looking for a new office, we had the brands already, so a store seemed like the next natural step. The thing I love most about the store, is watching people come in and feel like they can get down with what we are doing, really feel like they are a part of things. It kind of reminds me of when I was a kid, growing up in Torquay and hanging out at the surf shops, getting to know the staff and stooping all day. I don't really hate anything about having a store, but I'm not a fan when people come in and call us a Hip Hop store, sure, Hip Hop is one small part of street culture, but there are so many other factors and influences.
Favourite place to eat in Melbourne?
Don Don on Swanston st.
Favourite place to drink in Melbourne?
On the stoop at the Heist. We got a BBQ and have regular parties there, and usually have a drink sponsor on board, if not there is the korean bottle shop around the corner who always have good specials.
Recommended tourist destination in Melbourne?
I don't think anyone reading this really gives a shit about going to the casino or to some park, so I'm going to say, walk the streets, ask questions and hunt things out, its the way to do it here. Bars and stores and galleries all tucked away down laneways and out of the way spots.

Summary
Some consider Tenue de Nîmes to be the new Mecca for denim, but it's much more than that. Just looking at the logo you can tell the boutique, established in November 2008, is straight up style and quality. Service is the magic word as far as the three are concerned; these guys will make every effort to delivery only the best, even if you're an international shopper calling in. Don't let the concise portfolio presented here fool you; Apart from the denim and contemporary fashion brands on the list, they stock pretty much anything that catches their fancy, from fountain-pens to bikes and from raw denim washing powder to sneakers. If you're not planning a trip up to Amsterdam, their web store is due early 2009. Photo: Joachim Baan
Mini Interview
We sat down with co-founder Menno van Meurs to ask Tenue de Nîmes a few quick questions.
What's the story behind the name?
Nîmes (France) is the place where the word denim originated. Additionally, Nîmes has been a legendary city known for it's exquisite fabrics and patterns. The paradox between the rawness of denim and the elegance of silk and patterns became the basic principle of the store. Tenue de Nîmes translates to an outfit from, or combined with denim. Our vision is to create the ultimate mix between the rawness of denim and the refinement of contemporary fashion.
Favourite place to eat in Amsterdam?
We simply love Caffè Toscanini an incredible Italian place at the Lindengracht 75 in Amsterdam.
Favourite place to drink in Amsterdam?
The Twenty Third Champagne & Cocktail Lounge Bar at the top of the Okura hotel. They serve the best cocktails of Amsterdam and you have a tremendous view over the city!
Recommended tourist destination in Amsterdam?
The Rijksmuseum is the most incredible museum of the Netherlands and a must see for everybody! They just did the exhibition 'For the love of God' from Damien Hirst but also exhibit master pieces from Rembrandt and van Gogh.

AM1 AM2 - Andreas Murkudis
Summary
Hidden behind the busy mainstream traffic of everyday shoppers and passers-by of Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt, Andreas Murkudis stores AM1 and AM2 are a breath of fresh air. The tidy furnishings and clean lines compliment the garments held within. Their compilation relishes the work of Martin Margiela, Sophia Kokosalaki and Y’s by Yohji Yamamoto to name a few, blended with established German designers like Andreas’ brother Kostas Murkudis. But really, I wanted to write this one up pretty much because the staff were unexpectedly super friendly and cute, stylish but not snobbish and didn’t fail to remember me when I walked past weeks later.
